What is Flame Retardant Fabric?

What is Flame Retardant Fabric? Fire retardant fabric is a special type of technical fabric that prevents the spread of fire. The important thing is that its flame retardant features are in its manufacturing materials and do not have any issues from the finish. It can be incorporated chemically into the polymer molecule or mixed physically into polymers after polymerization to suppress, reduce, or improve the spread of flame.

Especially fire hazards are associated with burning clothes. Cellulose which is often used in clothing is sustainable. But, it has many common features in heat. The weight and weave determine the fabric’s heat resistance. Loose woven fabrics heat up quickly but heavier and stronger woven fabrics heat up slowly in comparison.

There are different types of retardants, as below:

  • Brominated flame retardants.
  • Carbon-based flame retardants.
  • Chlorinated flame retardants.
  • Mineral flame retardants.
  • Phosphorous-containing flame retardants.
  • Nitrogen-containing flame retardants.
  • Inorganic flame retardants.
  • Phosphorous flame retardants.
  • Silicon Based flame retardants.
  • Synergists flame retardants, etc.

Treatment of Flame Retardant Fabric:

Heat is important, especially for fabric. A retardant finish is allowed for fabrics to protect from burns. Further treatment is applied to the fabric to create a flame retardant fabric. They are discussed below:

1. Fabric treatments:

Fire retardant products can be applied to both natural textile fibers and synthetic fibers. The textile fiber is treated with chemicals that can reduce the temperature of the fabric. When a fire occurs, the Flame Retardant Fabric interacts with the gases and tars produced. It converts gases and tar into carbon char. This ultimately reduces the thermal conductivity of the fabric.

Various fire retardants are used in fabric treatment:

2. Non-permanent & semi-permanent treatment:

Non-permanent & Semi-permanent treatments are used for substrates that are not exposed to water and are not wetted. In this treatment, the principle involves dissolving salt in water and soaking the fiber or cloth with this solution, and then drying the cloth. The salt remains on the cloth. It helps the system delay the appearance or spread of fire.

The impregnation is usually done with padding. To wash means to soak the cloth in the bath. Then the path between the two superimposed rollers applied a high pressure. The tool used to do this is called a ‘mangle’. This is a simple method to use. It is cheap and works for many fibers. The ‘mangle’ device makes it possible to stop the absorption, get the salt deep into the fabric, and recover the excess. Therefore, the drying process follows.

3. Complete treatment:

In this permanent treatment, two types of treatment are available for cellulose. The first treatment is to attach a chemical molecule to cellulose, using one of its own OH-groups. One is based on the polymerization of the product itself, which creates a network in and around the fiber, without creating a chemical bond. In both treatments, the material used is based on phosphorus.

In medicine, it is important to work in an acidic environment. This causes a loss of fiber strength, usually 15- 30%. Another solution is to maintain almost constant electrical energy. It can also be used on cellulose or synthetic fiber blends. It provides better resistance to fire. Used as follows:

Padding in the bathtub contains a fire retardant product. The pre-condensate of Tetrakis Hydroxymethyl phosphonium chloride (THPC)

Hardening according to well-defined procedures.

Washing and oxidation remove unbound products and stabilize phosphorus at five bonds.

Finally drying.

In this process, the machine is filled with gaseous ammonia which allows the polycondensation chemical to take place. The ammonia group acts as a link between different molecules.

This permanent treatment allows obtaining the best non-flammable results, up to M1 & B1 classifications. Permanent is mainly used to make protective clothing for trades exposed to fire hazards: firefighters, soldiers, electricians, etc.

Uses of Fire Retardant Fabrics:

Flame Retardant Fabric is often used in industrial workers’ clothing, firemen’s uniforms, military pilot’s suits, military dress, tent fabric, parachute fabric, professional racing clothing, etc. Materials like ‘Twaron’ are mainly used to withstand high temperatures inside. industry such as firefighting. A fire retardant cloth protects the wearer from fire, electric arcs, etc. It is mainly used in interior items such as curtains, hotels, hospitals, stadiums, etc.

In this modern era, the presence of hot materials in our homes (curtains, carpets, jewelry, plastics, etc.), a common room in the house can reach 600 ° C in three minutes. Fire retardants in consumer goods and furniture help prevent fires. Sometimes it only takes a few minutes to save lives to escape from danger. Fireproofing fabrics save lives and protect property by helping to prevent fires from starting and spreading.
